Local communities driving impact

The B Corp movement is growing fast, with more and more companies looking to use business as a force for good. But making an impact is not just about what happens inside a single company. It’s about creating connections that strengthen entire communities, by bringing businesses together not only through shared values but through shared geography, shared challenges, and a shared vision for a better future.

That’s why B Locals are springing up across the Netherlands and beyond: fostering local hubs where collaboration, inspiration, and community-led impact can thrive.

So, what are B Locals? And who are they for?

B Locals are open, grassroot communities where B Corps –and anyone passionate about using business for good– can connect, learn, and collaborate to drive positive change in their regions. Think of a B Local like your neighbourhood hub for impact-minded businesses. It’s where ideas are shared, partnerships are formed, and action begins; right where you live and work.

These communities organise events, spark new collaborations, and raise awareness about the role of business in creating a better future. They bring the global B Corp movement to life at the local level, by building relationships, sharing knowledge, and creating momentum for collective action. B Locals: Part of the Bigger Picture

B Locals are more than just meetups. They’re a crucial part of the global B Corp movement. By connecting businesses with shared values and ambitions, B Locals create momentum for systems change, helping to build an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.

They raise awareness, foster collaborations that tackle local and global challenges, and build bridges between businesses, governments, and communities.

B Locals are where ideas become action, and where the power of the collective is strongest.

An example? B Local Limburg partnes with environmental initiatives like the Maas Clean-Up — a collective effort to clean plastic and other waste from the river Maas and its banks. By mobilizing businesses and local citizens to join cleanup activities, they’re turning shared values into tangible environmental action.

Why do we need B Locals?

In a context of social and governmental backlash on sustainability initiatives, B Locals are stepping up in their regions to keep the momentum going. While some governments are scaling back climate commitments or stalling on social progress, communities of businesses are coming together to stay true to their values and lead by example. B Locals are one way this is happening: practical, local, and community-driven.

They create space for collective action by:

  • Building connections across sectors, businesses, and changemakers.
  • Creating inclusive learning spaces, from workshops on circularity, to dialogues on the new  B Corp standards.
  • Mobilising a shared voice that’s louder and stronger than any individual company could achieve alone.
  • Collaborating with local policymakers, knowledge institutions, and other communities to drive  impact.

By strengthening these networks, B Locals catalyse impact from the ground up, driving systemic change beyond business and into society at large, and showing that, even when broader systems falter, local communities still come together to make meaningful progress.

B Locals in the Netherlands: Building Momentum Together

Let’s take a tour through the Dutch B Local landscape and you’ll find community energy everywhere:

  • Utrecht is a standout example where local entrepreneurs and regional organisations are building bridges with city government and impact networks. Their first community event sparked fresh collaborations, and now they’re planning to host thematic sessions connecting impact themes from the new B Corp standards, such as Climate Action, to local challenges of the Utrecht region, exploring how to tackle them collectively.
  • In the East of the Netherlands (Gelderland and Overijssel), a growing network that combines business and knowledge to drive impact is being built. With their official launch event this year, they are shaping a vibrant community focused on collaboration, knowledge sharing, and amplifying social and environmental impact. Some plans include taking part in local volunteering activities like Clean Up Friday, guest lectures at schools, and supporting refugees with employment opportunities.
  • In Zuid-Holland, meetups and knowledge-sharing sessions are flourishing, creating opportunities for businesses to connect, share insights, and strengthen their impact journeys. A great example is their upcoming Speed date event, to help B Corps break the ice, share dilemmas, and spark ideas for future collaborations.
  • Noord Nederland recently hosted its first regional event, an energising kick-off that sparked discussions around the new B Corp standards and how companies can prepare for the future. Plans are in place for company visits, networking drinks, and events that connect B Corps with knowledge institutions, governments, and entrepreneurs across the Northern provinces.
  • Notably, Limburg became the first official B Local in the Netherlands in September 2024. This community has been particularly active, partnering with environmental initiatives like the Maas Clean Up to engage businesses and local citizens in tangible environmental action. They also organise B Corp company visits and awareness events to help more organisations discover the benefits and responsibilities of becoming a B Corp.
  • In Noord Brabant, a new community of B Corps and regional leaders is taking shape. A core team is forming a board and laying the foundations to create a thriving community of businesses eager to learn, connect, and make a collective impact.
