The Social Hub

More than just a hotel, The Social Hub creates spaces where students, travelers, and entrepreneurs connect and grow. As a B Corp, they are redefining hospitality by embedding social impact, sustainability, and inclusivity at the heart of their business.

The B Corp community in the Benelux recently passed the milestone of 500 Certified B Corporations—each with its own way of using business as a force for good. In this blog series we highlight inspiring stories from Certified B Corporations. Through interviews with our B Corp community, we uncover the lessons, challenges, and triumphs of businesses that are redefining success.

In this edition, we feature The Social Hub—a hybrid hospitality company on a mission to create a better society. With spaces that combine hotel rooms, student housing, co-working, and community hubs, The Social Hub is reimagining what hospitality can mean in today’s world. And as of October 2024, they’ve become a proud member of the global B Corp community.

Hospitality as a Platform for Change

“People come to us for a weekend away or a longer stay—and of course they want to make the most of it,” says Amber Westerborg, Director of Sustainability and Impact. “That includes long showers, fresh towels, breakfast buffets… and while that’s understandable, it’s also a challenge if you want to operate responsibly.”

But The Social Hub doesn’t see that as a contradiction. Instead, it’s an invitation to do things differently. Their hybrid spaces are designed to welcome people from all walks of life—guests, students, entrepreneurs, and local communities—offering more than a place to stay. They offer a place to learn, grow, and connect with purpose. It’s hospitality with impact at its core.

“We believe that bringing people together—across age, background, and life stage—can spark new ideas and a deeper sense of community,” says Amber.

Why B Corp Certification Matters

For The Social Hub, becoming a B Corp was a natural step in their impact journey. “We’ve always valued environmental and societal impact, but we were looking for a way to benchmark ourselves, to keep ourselves accountable,” Amber shares.

The B Impact Assessment helped them do just that—by looking not just at one aspect of the business, but the full picture: from governance and workers to environment, community, and customers.

“B Corp helped us realise that doing good isn’t enough—it’s about doing better every day.”

One of their first major initiatives as a B Corp was the launch of the TSH Talent Foundation, which pledges 1% of the company’s revenue to support the next generation of changemakers.

In its first year, the foundation welcomed 37 students across The Social Hub locations in Europe, offering scholarships and life skills programming. The goal? To grow that number to 200 students annually in the years ahead. “We want to equip young people with the tools, mindset, and support to make a difference in the world,” says Amber.

Leading by Example in a Challenging Industry

The hospitality and real estate sectors are still in the early stages of sustainability transformation. For The Social Hub, that’s not a barrier—it’s a call to lead.

“It’s not just about tweaking a few suppliers,” says Amber. “It’s about the industry saying: this is the new standard.”

That mindset runs through every corner of their business. Whether it’s how they manage waste and water, or how they host programming around environmental and social issues, The Social Hub aims to drive systems change by setting the tone for what hospitality can—and should—look like.

Collaboration Is Key

As much as B Corp is about accountability, it’s also about community. And The Social Hub is quick to recognise the value of being part of a movement.“You can’t do it alone. If you want to shift an industry, you need to find your people—your collaborators. That’s what the B Corp movement helps us do.” And in true Social Hub spirit, they’re opening their doors and sharing their story—not just to grow their own impact, but to invite others along on the journey.
